North Tarawa is laid-back. It is the perfect place to enjoy the beauty of Kiribati’s island landscapes, tropical aqua waters, inviting and hospitable I-Kiribati locals and authentic island culture.
In close proximity to Betio and South Tarawa where Kiribati’s main international airport, commercial port and much of the nation’s commerce takes place.
Although services are limited on North Tarawa, great potential exists for sustainable population and business growth consistent with the Council’s vision for development across its communities.
North Tarawa forms the largest islet group in the Tarawa Atoll which also include Betio and South Tarawa along the southern edge of the atoll. North Tarawa stretch from Buota in the south to Naa in the north and has a total land area of approximately 15.25 sq. kms.
15 main villages stretch across the islet chain for North Tarawa’s population of approximately 7,041 persons permanent residents (2020 Census). The Council is situated in Abaokoro together with a range of other Government of Kiribati (GoK) services.
The main villages across North Tarawa from north to south are: Naa, Buariki, Tearinibai, Nuatabu, Tebwangoroi, Taratai, Nootoue, Abaokoro, Marenanuka, Tabonibara, Kainaba, Nabeina, Tabiteuea, Abatao and Buota.
North Tarawa can be reached by boat, including public ferry, from Bairiki on South Tarawa and private boat from Betio. Buota can be accessed by light vehicle or motorbike directly from South Tarawa. Motorcycle and foot access may be possible between other North Tarawa islets across channels during very low tides.
International access is facilitated through Bonriki International Airport on South Tarawa or through the main port at Betio. Visa and Customs clearance requirements may also apply. Daytime temperatures range between 30 oC (Jan. to Jul,) and 31 oC (Aug. to Dec.). Nights range between 24 oC and 25 oC across the year. Rainfall varies between approximately 100 mm in September and 300 mm in January. The wetter months extend from about December to March. Rain can occur during any month of the year.
Water temperature is a warm 29 oC most months of the year dropping a degree between March and April. Winds are generally light from the east and particularly help cool during the evenings and nights.
